• Nearly there!

Friday we landed in the vineyard area near Cape Town at Svellendam, on a private strip in a vineyard. The owner was a pilot and made us extremely welcome, taking us on a personal tour of the vineyards. Some drinking of fantastic wine too! Today we had some 150 miles to get to the airfield just north of Cape Town, where we started and will complete, a trip round Southern Africa.

Been a mad couple of days. Yesterday flew from Cape St Francis to Oudtshoorn. 1st hour was very pleasant along the coast and 2nd hour a bit rough over the mountains. Met up with Ricky and Alan South African trike pilots who are flying around the world over the next eighteen months…link to their site soon! Today flew South to the coast and stopping over at kynsna tonight before continueing towards Cape Town tomorrow.

Yesterday we managed 230 miles to Mazeepa Bay - aided by a great tail wind. Today we were heading to Port Albert but only managed 18 miles in 50 minutes and are now at KeimouthJim and John (via Ingrid) #117

Had a really early start at 05.15 and flew 400km in 2 legs, with a tailwind! First stop, place called St John’s - spectacular place to put a runway - on top of a ridge with 2000ft drop into a gorge at the end! Second stop Mazeppa Bay. OK I will learn the Fish Song but JP says it is very difficult and needs loads of beer to do it properly.
  • Wednesday and Thursday

Yesterday we flew 120 miles south to Durban in less than ideal weather. When we landed we were told there was a guest house with an air strip and hangerage 5 minutes away, so after a coffee we flew on. We are now staying in a very nice guest house near Durban and the trikes are enjoying a night in a hangar - just as well as the wind is very strong!
  • Tues 10th Dec

Thanks to all the people who have kept the diary updated via text messages over the last few weeks. This 1 is actually from us live in south africa !Not quite the welcome back into the country we had hoped for !!!!!! We are both alive well & free but landing at a non-designated point of entry has caused us a few problems.Grounded at Richards Bay today (due to weather only) but hoping it improves tomorrow so we can continue to Cato Ridge.
