Fly UK 2009 (by FlyUK2009)

Steve and Chris join a bunch of fellow microlighters on an aerial pub crawl counter-clockwise around the UK. This year Steve is taking the group Zenair Zodiac rather than his CFM Shadow as there's no way Chris will fit in the back of that for a week!

This years FLY-UK

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-12 13:09:47

The route just received shows we're starting at Sywell just north of Northampton on Friday 19th June.

The total distance expected to be covered is 2200 miles, but - and this is a big but - that includes routes over inhospitable terrain that we're almost certainly going to route around adding another few hundred miles to the total.

We'll be including John O'Groats and possibly the Orkney Islands, the Western Isles, Northern Ireland (Definitely life jackets for that one), Wales, the South-West including Lands End and Lundy Island, then the South Coast, up Kent, Suffolk, Norfolk and a visit to the Red Arrows home :)

Inverness Update

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-17 21:10:26

It's just been announced that Inverness Airport have given us all a free landing which is a saving of about 16, due to the charity work Fly-UK does.

Well done Inverness!

That brings the total number of airfields supporting this years Fly-UK by offering free landings to 11, including (in no particular order) Sywell, Netherthorpe, Strathaven, Culbokie, Plockton, Glenforsa, Haverfordwest, Swansea, St. Marys and Sutton Meadows.

Nice - thanks guys!

Arrived Sywell (Northampton)

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-19 18:11:23

Positioning flight to Sywell against a good 20 knot headwind took 90 minutes for an average speed of 60. Very warm welcome with no landing fee. Tent up and currently in the bar with a beer :-) blowing a gale here due to be better tomorrow which is handy as tomorrow we have over 300 miles to go...

Wet wet wet

From FlyUK2009

A nice hours run from Sywell to Neverthorpe.

Interesting trip to Fishburn dodging showers all over the place but excellent service from all the radar equipped stations. Took exactly 2 hours from Neverthorpe.

Then it rained. And then rained some more. Very kindly somebody has left a trough directly overhead and it's slow moving... 8 of us decided to not be heroes like the rest and are staying here tonight ready for an early morning departure to catch up.

Somehow I managed to lose my Phone charger enroute, and my Moto seems to not be a popular phone. I'm bolloxed for updates now, I've stolen a laptop for this update...

Oops, best laid plans

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-22 12:23:53

How annoying is it when you carefully pack everything you need at home only to find at some remote place your phone charger is missing... Very.

One 40 quid taxi fair into grimsby later and I have a new one. Now to catch up with what we've been up to!

Saturday

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-22 14:11:03

Despite a rude awakening at silly o'clock in the morning by several of the group getting an early start, we didn't manage to get away until 1000.

Battled a headwind to Netherthorpe dodging heavy showers all the way. Got fuel and crisps and on to Fishburn, landing on a crazy runway - amazing undulations!

Shortly afterwards the rain started and rarely stopped. Camped in the lubhouse, nice and dry :-)

Sunday

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-22 14:17:17

Spent most of the day deciding on a plan with the rain more on than off.

The original plan was into Scotland for the Highlands and Islands, but the forecast was awful.

Most pressed on but we decide we weren't heroic enough, so time for 'Plan B'.

Off Piste

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-22 14:29:06

Plan B we decided was to go somewhere the sun is shining...

Went South down the east coast past Hartleypool, Whitby and Scarborough into Eddsfield about 10 miles north of Driffield.

A nice sunny day and lovely views.

After lunch went on to North Coates just along the coast from Grimsby. Nice walk along the beach and then discovered the bonus of a hot shower included in the landing fee of three quid!

Taxi into Grimsby - 40 quid return - for a nice Italian dinner.

Taxi driver who drove us back last night offered to drive up into Grimsby as a favour - for free!

Bought a car charger and mains charger for my lost mobile phone one (it's a Motorola and nobody had one) for a tenner the pair - result!

Now to decide where to next.

Monday continued

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-23 09:02:35

The bombing range at Donna Nook was fairly active so we had a leisurely lunch and several teas and decided to pick a couple of short hops.

Into North Moor (Scunthorpe) where Eric and wife made up very welcome. No landing fee and free tea to boot.

Then we dropped into Coal Aston just South of Sheffield to camp. Walked through fields to the local Inn for dinner and then swam back as it had rained while we ate. Shoes drowned.

Pretty sunrise though.

Carlisle

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-23 23:15:37

So, departed Fishburn to cross the mountains to Carlise, and half way enroute happened to read the Pooleys information for Carlisle to make a startling discovery - they closed at 1830, and that was in 25 minutes...

Opened the tap some more which with a slight tailwind gave us a little over 100MPH across ground.

Made it to Carlisle with zero seconds to spare - the tower broadcast they were closing the second I called final and the guy in the tower was out and away in his car before I'd even turned off the runway. Ate at the Golden Fleece with the others and Charlie.

Breakfast time in Carlisle

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-24 08:39:46

We B&Bd it in Carlisle as the last time I was here we were all locked in with no facilities when the airport closed at night. Stayed at The Sands guest house which having a shower was just the job.

Charlie, a senior developer from work, lives in Carlise so he very kindly ferried us from the airport to the guest house, then to the pub and back to the guest house. Thanks Charlie - the beer and food was small compensation for your generosity.

Chris is having a go flying, check out the concentration, LOL.

Actually, Chris was a great help to be fair, changing transponder codes, looking up stuff in Pooleys, cross checking the map and generally being useful. Thanks Chris!

Thursday

From FlyUK2009
2009-06-25 16:37:30

Woke up today to discover the promised trough had arrived early and our much waited for destination (the Scilly Isles) was now unreachable.

Had an 'interesting' trip across the Severn hearing some others turning back mid way due to the sea fog / wierd cloud bank that was just offfshore. Was thankful for the radar service...

Groped our way back through Devon and Somerset arriving back at our home field for lunch. Not sure about going any further due to the weather, will see tomorrow.

Back at Old Sarum having lunch and happy about our trip.

In total, with missing the Highlands and Islands and the Scilyl Isles, we flww for 19.1 hours in 7 days. Not too bad really.

I think between us we've managed to rekindly Chris' interest in flying (he spent 5 years in the air cadets) and he's going to be lookin ginto taking it up. Excellent :)
